Pacific Magazines delivers largest share increase year-on-year of ALL major magazine publishers!

Pacific Magazines increases share year-on-year in nine categories: women’s weeklies, major women’s monthlies, women’s lifestyle, men’s lifestyle, fashion, youth, tween, entertaining, and health!

Pacific boasts 2 of the top 5 biggest circulation increases year-on-year of ALL magazines!

New Idea closes the gap on Woman’s Day   as Woman’s Day falls to lowest circulation in 30 years! 

New Idea and FAMOUS – the only two women’s weekly magazines to post year-on-year growth!

Friday 13th August 2010 - Pacific Magazines, the publishing arm of the Seven Media Group, has outperformed the market to deliver the largest share increase year-on-year of all major magazine publishers.

Over the last 12 months, Pacific Magazines has increased share in nine of the eleven magazine categories that it operates in: women’s weeklies, major women’s monthlies, women’s lifestyle, men’s lifestyle, fashion, youth, tween, entertaining, and health.

In key categories, Pacific Magazines delivers the No 1 titles:

No 1 – Better Homes and Gardens (homes and lifestyle) 11th consecutive year-on-year increase

No 1 – Famous (fastest growing weekly) 7th consecutive circulation increase

No 1 – Who (celebrity weekly) increases lead over competitors NW and OK!

No 1 – That’s Life! (real life) extends lead over Take 5

No 1 – marie claire (fashion) accounts for almost one third of gross copies sold in fashion category

No 1 – Men’s Health (men’s lifestyle) 14th consecutive circulation increase

No 1 – Women’s Health (women’s healthy lifestyle) fifth consecutive circulation increase

No 1 – Total Girl and K-Zone (tween) both titles outperform nearest competitor by more than double

The result sees Pacific Magazines concurrently increase its share of gross copies sold to 29.8% (up from 27.8% a year ago) and share of consumer magazines expenditure to 26.9% (up from 24.2% a year ago).

Pacific Magazines achieved two of the top 5 biggest circulation increases (‘000) year-on-year of all magazines. Better Homes and Gardens (No.2) increased copies sold by 12,973 copies during the last 12 months, followed closely by Famous (No.5) which increased 7,926 copies year-on-year.

Pacific Magazines’ flagship title, New Idea grew circulation by 0.3% year-on-year, whilst its major competitor, Woman’s Day fell to its lowest circulation since 1980. New Idea reduced the gap on Woman’s Day by 8,585 copies during the last 12 months, from 82,463 to 73,878.

Mr Nick Chan, CEO, Pacific Magazines said, “Pacific Magazines has posted a robust circulation result, to grow overall share and record market leading results for key titles.

“Pacific continues to deliver strategic wins that strengthens our position in key categories – including New Idea posting growth, as its major competitor falls to its lowest circulation in 30 years.”

Over the past 12 months, Australians bought a total of 28.5 million magazine copies published by Pacific Magazines.

New Idea (326,137) One of the top two highest selling weekly magazines in the country, New Idea has outperformed both the women’s weekly category as well as its nearest competitor, posting a 0.3% increase year-on-year. New Idea, along with stable mate FAMOUS, were the only two women’s weekly magazines to post year-on-year growth.

FAMOUS (88,519) FAMOUS enjoyed another outstanding release, posting circulation growth of 9.8% year-on-year (+7,926) the largest growth of any other weekly title. This is the 7th consecutive circulation increase for FAMOUS. In contrast, NW has shed 17,000 copies every week or 12.1% compared to this time last year, to record their lowest ever circulation result.

Who (134,546) At a circulation of 134,546, Who maintains its position as the highest selling celebrity weekly magazine to outperform OK! by 32,984 copies (32.4%), Grazia by 73,460 copies (selling 2.2x more copies).

That’s Life! (274,106) That’s Life! has consolidated its position in the real life market, steadying this release with only a marginal decline on the period. The title now sells an average of 52K or 23% more copies than Take 5 every week.

Better Homes and Gardens (382,973) The third highest selling magazine in the country, Better Homes and Gardens has recorded a circulation of 382,973, to post its 11th consecutive year-on-year increase. Better Homes and Gardens enjoyed the 2nd largest year-on-year increase (‘000) of all magazines.

Home Beautiful (73,597) Home Beautiful increased 1,301 copies or 1.8% since December 2009 and 3,117 copies or 4.4% since June 2009 (HB’s biggest year-on-year increase in 9 years - since June 2001). This is Home Beautiful’s highest circulation in five years.

marie claire (110,873) Australia’s number one fashion magazine has posted a circulation of 110,873. marie claire alone accounts for almost one third (32%) of all gross copies sold in the fashion market.

InStyle (61,912) InStyle posted a strong release, growing both year-on-year and period-on-period.

Women’s Health (92,666) Women’s Health posted its fifth consecutive increase in the June 2010 audit, posting a figure of 92,666 to boast its highest ever audit figure.

Men’s Health (75,579) Men’s Health posted a year-on-year increase of 0.4% to cement its lead as the country’s biggest selling men’s lifestyle title. The title now occupies 40% share of gross copies sold in the Men’s Lifestyle market and 60% share of consumer’s expenditure.

Prevention (70,082) Prevention has settled slightly since its impressive launch and has audited a figure of 70,082. In the six months to June 2010, consumers have spent $2.5 million buying Prevention adding an extra 420,000 copy sales to the magazine market.

Girlfriend (90,165) Girlfriend has posted a decline this release, but has steadied on the period. Girlfriend re-launched with a comprehensive redesign incorporating a new masthead, layouts and fonts, a new cover-mount strategy, fresh sections and a revised body image policy with the current issue on sale.

Total Girl (51,566) Total Girl the no. 1 tween girls’ magazine in the market, selling an average of 51,566 copies – this is more than double the copy sales of any other tween girls’ title.

K-Zone (50,272) K-Zone remains the number one selling tween boys title in the market, with an average net paid sales audit of 50,272 copies. K-Zone owns 24% market share of the tween magazine category and 54% of the tween boys category.

Diabetic Living (53,591) Diabetic Living delivered an outstanding result, being the only title in its category to post year-on-year growth. Diabetic Living not only outperformed the market, but experienced its third consecutive year-on-year increase at 5.5% to post its second highest circulation release ever.

Weight Watchers (67,135) Circulation was steady on the quarter (-0.1%). Consumers spent almost $2.4 million on Weight Watchers in the 6 months to June 2010, an increase of $260,000 year-on-year.
