Pacific Magazines secures two of the five largest circulation increases
Pacific Magazines, the publishing arm of the Seven Media Group, has outperformed the market to deliver the largest circulation share increase of all major publishers to 29.2% of gross copies sold (up from 27.5% a year ago).
During the robust audit period, Pacific Magazines achieved two of the top five largest circulation increases year-on-year with Better Homes and Gardens (#4) and Famous (#5). The result sees Pacific Magazines selling one in four of all magazines sold in Australia - and two magazine copies every second.
Mr Nick Chan, CEO, Pacific Magazines, said, “This is an impressive circulation audit for Pacific Magazines. We’ve outperformed the market, delivered stand-out results for key titles and posted strategically significant wins.
“Overall our portfolio is strong, our brands are clearly differentiated and the economic outlook is more encouraging than it has been for sometime,” added Chan.

Over the past 12 months, Australians bought over 58 million copies of magazines published by Pacific Magazines, and spent over $254 million purchasing Pacific Magazines titles. The latest audit also confirms Pacific Magazines’ leadership in key publishing categories, including: homes and lifestyle, fashion, tween, and men’s lifestyle.
Magazines summary:
New Idea (330,107) - One of the top two highest selling weekly magazines in the country, New Idea has remained steady in this audit, at a circulation of 330,107.
That’s Life! (283,759) - That’s Life! has consolidated its position in the real life market, increasing its leadership on competitor Take 5 by 6%, or 3K copies in the last 12 months. That’s Life! now sells an average of 52K or 23% more copies than competitor Take 5 every week.
Who (138,154) – Posting a 1.2% period-on-period circulation increase to 138,154. For the first time in eight years Who has overtaken NW, now leading NW by over 10,000 copies every week.
FAMOUS (85,572) - FAMOUS secured another impressive release, posting circulation growth of 15.3% YOY (+11,335) and 2.1% (+1730) POP – the largest growth of any weekly title. This is the 5th consecutive circulation increase for FAMOUS.
Better Homes and Gardens (392,000+) – The third highest selling magazine in the country, Better Homes and Gardens secured the largest period-on-period increase (‘000) of all magazines. Jumping to a circulation of 392,000+, this is Better Homes and Gardens’ highest circulation ever.
Prevention (75,000+) – Prevention exceeded pre-launch targets, to deliver an impressive first issue audit of 75,000+ copies.
Women’s Health (91,653) – Women’s Health posted its highest audit figure ever to 91,653 - and its fourth consecutive increase. In the six months to December 09, consumers spent over $3.8million purchasing Women’s Health.
Men’s Health (77,609) – Men’s Health has also posted its highest ever audit figure. In the past six months, Men’s Health circulation has grown by 3.1% to now occupy a 45% market share (gross copies sold) in the Men’s Lifestyle market and 64% share of consumer’s expenditure of Men’s Lifestyle magazines.
marie claire (112,682) - marie claire, Australia’s number one fashion magazine, posted a circulation of 112,682 to outperform its nearest competitor by over 20,000 copies. marie claire alone accounts for almost one third (29.2%) of all gross copies sold in the fashion market.
In Style (61,804) – InStyle has remained steady both year-on-year and period-on-period. The title combines with marie claire to provide Pacific Magazines with a leading 47% share of the fashion market.
Diabetic Living (54,183) - Diabetic Living delivered an outstanding result, recording its highest circulation figure ever and the highest YOY increases (% and ‘000) in the category. Diabetic Living not only outperformed the market but also delivered the 6th highest YOY increase (%) of all magazines.
Home Beautiful (72,296) – Home Beautiful increased circulation both YOY (2.9%) and POP (2.6%) to enjoy its highest circulation in 4 ˝ years.
Your Garden (56,201) - Your Garden increased its circulation by 4.4% to post its highest circulation
figure since 2001.
K-Zone (52,725) - K-Zone remains the number one selling youth title in the market, to sell twice as many copies as its closest competitor.
Total Girl (52,359) – Total Girl is Australia’s no. 1 tween girls magazine, selling more than double the copy sales of any other tween girls title. Pacific Magazines continues to lead the tween market, holding a 41% share of gross copies sold – and achieves this with only two titles (K-Zone & Total Girl) in a market of eight magazines.
Girlfriend (100,061) - While experiencing a decline, Girlfriend maintains an impressive circulation over 100K, placing it among the top 20 circulation women’s magazines in the country.
Weight Watchers (67,219) – Despite a decline in average issue circulation, total copy sales in the 6 months to Dec 09 increased 31% POP and 93% YOY, due to a change in frequency from bi-monthly to monthly.
